What is Music Therapy?
Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

From the American Music Therapy Association
In Our Own Words...
Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession in which credentialed music therapists create non-musical goals and objectives for each client, and use music-based interventions in treatment as the vehicle to target individual and group needs.

Music therapy is for children and adults and all ranges of disabilities and illnesses. Interventions are designed to:
-
promote physical rehabilitation
-
promote wellness
-
manage stress
-
alleviate pain
-
express feelings
-
enhance memory
-
improve communication

Music therapy does not require clients to have any music knowledge or abilities. The client's goals, preferences, circumstances, and need for treatment help to determine the types of music a music therapist may use.

What does a Music Therapist do?
Music Therapists work to improve, enhance, or maintain emotional, physical, social, and cognitive well-being. They achieve these goals through singing, instrument play, lyric analysis, movement to music, songwriting, improvisation, music learning & performance, receptive music listening, and more.

The following populations and conditions can be reached by music therapy: children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly with mental health needs, developmental and learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease and other aging related conditions, substance abuse problems, brain injuries, physical disabilities, and acute and chronic pain, including mothers in labor.
